WHY SO MUCH OF YOUR WARDROBE COMES FROM WAR The trench coat. Aviator sunglasses. The bomber jacket. Cargo pants. Today, they are fashion. But they weren’t designed to be. Some were created to keep soldiers dry in muddy trenches. Others helped pilots survive freezing cockpits, protected their eyes at altitude, or gave troops a practical way to carry equipment into battle. And then something strange happened. The wars ended. The designs survived. This film traces how military necessity became civilian fashion — from the trenches of the First World War to aircraft cockpits, cargo pockets, modern runways, and the clothes hanging in our wardrobes today. But the connection between war and clothing isn’t only historical. Modern conflicts can still affect the energy, materials, factories, freight routes and global supply chains behind what we wear. Because fashion doesn’t exist outside history. Sometimes, the history is still stitched into the clothes. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ CHAPTERS 00:00 — Cold Open The clothes you’re wearing may have a military past. Chapter 1 — DESIGNED FOR WAR How battlefield problems shaped practical clothing. Chapter 2 — FROM FUNCTION TO ICON How military designs escaped the battlefield and entered civilian life. Chapter 3 — THE POCKET THAT SURVIVED How cargo pockets went from carrying military equipment to carrying our phones. Chapter 4 — HOW WAR BECOMES FASHION Why some military designs survive long after the problems that created them disappear. Chapter 5 — WAR STILL REACHES YOUR WARDROBE How conflict, petroleum, synthetic fibres, shipping routes and global supply chains can still connect war to clothing today. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES This documentary draws on historical archives, museum collections, military records, fashion history, material-science research and contemporary reporting.
