If you look at the left wrist of this jacket, there is an actual optical glass window stitched directly into the cuff. It looks like an eccentric design experiment, but it was originally engineered to keep drivers alive. Back in 1988, drivers were running the brutal Mille Miglia - an open-cockpit endurance race cutting straight from Brescia to Rome and back. At triple-digit speeds on rough roads, both hands had to remain glued to the wheel. If a driver took a hand off the steering wheel just to peel back a heavy sleeve and check their split time, they risked losing control of the vehicle. The design team treated the sleeve like part of the dashboard: they installed a dedicated lens directly over the wrist so drivers could check their watch without moving a muscle. Around that exact same time, researchers were examining Japanese civil-defense hoods engineered for disaster survival. These were protective balaclavas with front zippers and built-in eye lenses. Designers adapted that concept so a heavy continuous zipper could pull straight up past the mouth and nose, completely sealing the human head inside the garment. That immediately triggered a mechanical crisis. Sewing rigid optical glass directly into woven cotton created stress points that shredded the fabric under heavy wind pressure. To fix it, an Italian sports-optics lab engineered custom structural frames that locked the lenses into the weave without damaging the cloth. Decades later, that racing silhouette was rebuilt using eight-ounce waxed cotton originating from 1894 maritime England. Real utilitarian design never starts as a style choice - it starts as an answer to a dangerous physical problem. Original video credit: IG/@matsisland. - - - ⚠️No copyright infringement intended.
