If I were starting my product photography business all over again from scratch, here’s what I’d do PART 1. Invest in some basic gear. 1️⃣ Lighting You can absolutely use natural light however, investing in a good strobe light gives you WAY more control and higher quality results. You DO NOT need to buy an expensive light straight off the bat. I’d aim for something around 200-300w. Allocate a couple hundred dollars to your lighting (I PROMISE IT’S WORTH IT!) 2️⃣ A good lens DO NOT get the kit lens that comes with your camera. It’s a waste of your money. Instead, go for something like a 50m. Otherwise if you have more budget to spend, I’d recommend a 24-70m. 3️⃣ A tripod Camera stability when taking your product photos is important. This will help you avoid blurry or out of focus shots by keeping your camera stable while shooting. 4️⃣ A camera Special note, your LENS is more important than your camera body. So allocate budget accordingly here. A full frame might be best if you’re shooting in a small space. Also consider whether you plan to do video as well as you’ll need to ensure your camera is nicely equipped for video function too. 5️⃣ White foam boards A NECESSITY and very cheap. These are going to help you with your lighting, especially if you need to shoot reflective products. I’d recommend grabbing 2-3 to start with. 6️⃣ Coloured backgrounds Choose some colours that you want to display in your portfolio. For example, I started off investing in pink backdrops because a lot of skincare brands used pink for their colour palette. But with some photoshop skills, you can change your background to any colour!
