Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde on "Pagoo" || Books That Changed My Life

On this episode of Books That Changed My Life, Disney Legend and Imagineer, theme park designer, conservationist, and Renaissance man Joe Rohde joins Chris "Bulldog" Collins to talk about Pagoo by Holling Clancy Holling. The lavishly illustrated children's book about a hermit crab fused science, art, and narrative in a way that set the course for everything Rohde would go on to build, from Animal Kingdom to Pandora. Along the way, Rohde makes the case that creativity is structural, not a gift; that art is ultimately a science; that the best collaborations put no single person in the center; and that if you can sign your name across a blackboard, you can draw anything. He unpacks the design theory behind Disney's Animal Kingdom, the trick of getting an executive to really see grass, and why on the other side of every real piece of art, you can feel someone's agency. 00:00 Cold Open 00:50 Meet Joe Rohde 01:28 The Myth of the Anointed Artist 02:43 The Dog Chair 04:39 Why Creative Brains Never Rest 08:58 Kicked Out of the Treehouse 11:30 No One in the Center: Building Animal Kingdom 15:35 Creativity Is Math 18:21 Sign Your Name on the Blackboard 21:48 Join the Structure, Become Creative 22:49 Efficiency vs. Effectiveness 26:21 When Art Becomes Capital-C Creative 29:45 Getting the Execs to See the Grass 31:44 Five Rocks in the Forest 42:55 The Ego and the Vulnerable Artist 45:31 State of Mind Is State of Art 47:08 Directing Without a Lens 51:03 The Third Blue 55:23 The Inuit Painting 57:24 The Book: Pagoo 1:03:36 It's About a Crab 1:10:09 Just Pick a Shell 1:20:25 How Pagoo Changed His Life 1:20:59 Floating Mountains #booksthatchangedmylife #books #library #bookrecs #bookreport #interview #podcast #chrisbulldogcollins 🚨 Grab the coolest book & library tees, socks, hoodies & more! https://booksthatchangedmylife.org/collections/all
