This Smart Fabric Can Generate Electricity From Sunlight and Movement Scientists have developed a remarkable power-generating textile that can harvest energy from both sunlight and mechanical movement. Chen and his team created this innovative fabric by combining lightweight solar cells made from polymer fibres with triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which produce electricity when materials come into contact and move apart. Using a specialised weaving process, the researchers integrated these components into a flexible textile just 320 micrometres thick. This makes the fabric thin and lightweight enough to be incorporated into everyday products such as clothing, curtains and tents. A small prototype measuring only 4 × 5 centimetres demonstrated impressive performance. Under ambient sunlight and mechanical stimulation from sources such as human movement and wind, it charged a 2-millifarad capacitor to 2 volts in just one minute. The researchers also demonstrated practical applications. The textile was able to continuously power an electronic watch, directly charge a mobile phone, and drive water-splitting reactions. The technology could provide a new way to power next-generation wearable electronics without relying entirely on conventional batteries. By collecting energy from naturally available sunlight and everyday movement, such smart textiles could eventually make clothing and other fabrics self-powered, enabling more sustainable and convenient wearable devices.
